For translation, InDesign documents should ideally be exported to IDML (InDesign Markup Language) or INX (InDesign Interchange format), depending on the version of InDesign the file was created in. This facilitates translation and retains the formatting and layout of the document during the translation process.

To export a file for translation do the following:

  • Choose File > Save (CS6) or File > Export (CS5).
  • From the File Type (Windows) or Format (Mac OS) menu, choose InDesign Markup (IDML).
  • Click Save.

When the translation has been completed, you can open the file directly in InDesign and finalise the layout.
